Oxted & District History Society - Summer outing
Oxted & District History Society

Over 40 members of the Oxted & District History Society and their friends enjoyed the Society’s annual summer outing which this year visited Dover Castle.

The weather was fine and pleasantly warm to enable the History Society visitors to walk between the various attractions of this large site.

They were able to visit the recently restored staterooms in Henry II’s Great Tower and the exhibition which explained the background history during Henry II’s reign and the feuding between his sons.  The Regimental Museum contained brief histories of the various conflicts in which the British had been involved over the last several hundred years.

After enjoying lunch in the NAAFI Restaurant, the visitors were able to enjoy a guided tour of the Secret Wartime Tunnels with its Second World War command centre and hospital, before returning to Oxted on the coach.
